New Device may be able to treat Bladder Cancer
A bladder disease called interstitial cystitis affects millions people around the world, mostly women, with perhaps an equal number undiagnosed. At present, there are no good options for such people; the only treatment that reduces the symptoms of painful and very frequent urination, which can be debilitating and make it impossible to work, is an infusion of the drug lidocaine into the bladder through a catheter, but the treatment only provides brief relief and needs to be repeated frequently. Researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology think they have found a much better solution. They fill a small medical-grade silicone tube with the solid drug, after drilling a tiny hole in the tube using a laser beam. A shape-memory wire made of nitinol is threaded through the tube, which is then straightened out, placed in a catheter, and inserted into the bladder.

The PSP Go, launched in November 2009, already features software downloads through a wireless connection, allowing players to also browse the Internet, watch movies, play music and read books and comics. The new PlayStation handset would similarly work with Sony's online media platform, the company's answer to Apple's iTunes. To read more
Successful businessmen have Midas gene
Some people exhibit an exceptionally brilliant business sense, which may be a result of a particular gene they possess - says a new study. California Institute of Technology researchers believe they have found a 'Midas touch' gene, which makes some people brilliant at business deals. Inherited from parents, the gene variation called MAOA-L allows a person to make better decisions when it comes to risky financial deals. Such people are happy to take gambles - but only if the odds are in their favor. MAOA-L is linked with the brain chemicals serotonin, which affects mood and dopamine, which is involved in decisions.

New chip to make PCs 20 times faster
LONDON: In what could be called a major technological innovation, scientists have unveiled an ultra-fast chip which they claim could make desktop computers 20 times faster than the current ones. Modern computers have a processor with two, four or sometimes 16 cores to carry out tasks. Now, a team, led by the University of Glasgow, has developed a central processing unit which effectively have 1,000 cores on a single microchip. The developments could usher in a new age of high-speed computing in the next few years; the new "super" computer is also much greener than modern machines, despite its high speed, say its developers. The scientists used a chip called a Field Programmable Gate Array which allowed them to create more than 1,000 mini-circuits , effectively turning the chip into a 1,000-core processor. Users at risk of IE bug, warns Microsoft  :-Microsoft has issued a warning about an Internet Explorer bug that might hack into and take control of unprotected computers. Although Microsoft has already released a workaround solution for the bug, it is still working on the permanent solution, it said. In the meantime, it recommended those concerned use a protection system known as the Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit. The bug revolves around the way that IE manages a computer's memory when processing Cascading Style Sheets - a widely used technology that defines the look and feel of pages on a website. Criminals can exploit IE's memory management to inject their own malicious code into the stream of instructions a computer processes as a browser is being used. Installing and applying the toolkit may require Windows XP users to update the version of the operating system they are using. But even if they do that some of the protection it bestows on Windows 7 and Vista users will not be available. We're currently unaware of any attacks trying to use the claimed vulnerability or of customer impact," the BBC quoted Dave Forstrom, the director of Microsoft's Trustworthy Computing group, as saying. "As vulnerabilities go, this kind is the most serious as it allows remote execution of code. This means the attacker can run programs, such as malware, directly on the victim's computer," said Rik Ferguson, senior security analyst at Trend Micro . He added, "It is highly reminiscent of a vulnerability at the same time two years ago which prompted several national governments to warn against using IE and to switch to an alternative browser."

Korean app creates a virtual girlfriend (Mina,22)

Nabix, a South Korean applications developer, launched an app called "Honey, it's me!" for iPhone users on November 30. It achieved 80,000 downloads a day during an initial free launch period. There are a number of apps on the market that can make single men feel a little less lonesome, including a night time app that plays the sound of a female sleeping peacefully on the next pillow. But the "Honey, it's me!" application appears to be the first to make video-calls from a virtual model. Mina, 22, video-calls smartphone users three to four times a day for some sweet talk. Her messages range from "Are you still sleeping? Time for breakfast!" to "Good night, sweet dreams".A Korean model posed for the video calls and recorded more than 100 comments to melt the hearts of single men."I've developed this application to console people for their loneliness," said Kim Yoon-Kak, head of Nabix.

AMAZON'S KINDLE BOOKS TO OPEN ON WEB BROWSERs

SAN FRANCISCO--Amazon will make its Kindle electronic books available for reading on Web browsers beginning early next year, with people's digital collections saved in the Internet “cloud.” Amazon executives on Tuesday showed off “Kindle for the Web” at a Google press event introducing a new, swifter version of the California technology giant's Chrome software for navigating the Internet. Kindle for the Web was unveiled a day after Google opened an online electronic bookstore in a heavyweight entry into a booming market long dominated by Amazon.
Google eBookstore rolled out in the United States features the Mountain View, California-based company's massive library of digitized works online at books.google.com. Hundreds of thousands of digital books from leading publishers such as Macmillan, Random House and Simon & Schuster are for sale in the eBookstore, which Google said will expand internationally next year.
Google e-books are kept online in the Internet “cloud” and available for reading from any Web-linked computer or using free applications on gadgets such as Apple's iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch or on smartphones running Google's Android software.
Kindle for the Web will launch early next year and the application will be available in a Google Web Store that made its debut on Tuesday. Kindle books will be accessible through any standard browser, which will enable new features such as being able to do Internet searches on words highlighted in digital works, a demonstration showed.
“All the books you love will be right there in the browser,” said Amazon vice president David Limp. “All the books I have are backed up in the cloud.” About two months ago Amazon began letting people read the first chapters of Kindle e-books free through Web browsers. The expanded version of Kindle for the Web rolling out next year will allow bookstores, authors and others to earn fees for selling Amazon's digital books at their websites.
Kindle books can be read using most popular Internet gadgets including smartphones and iPads. “And now, anywhere you have a Web browser,” said Kindle Content vice president Russ Grandinetti. “Your reading library, last page read, bookmarks, notes, and highlights are always available to you no matter where you bought your Kindle books or how you choose to read them.”

                                 GOOGLE OPENS EBOOK STORE
Google has just opened the doors to its eBookstore, taking on rivals like Amazon and Apple. The bookstore, dubbed Google eBooks, is the biggest one in the world with over three million titles and “hundreds of thousands” for sale, the company said. The store is designed as an “open” system, wrote product manager Abraham Murray in a blog post. This means all purchased books can be stored in the cloud, making it available on all sorts of devices. Google has also launched a dedicated app to shop and read on the go—no internet connection necessary. Over 4,000 publishers have made books available through Google, reports The New York Times.  Despite its size and the ubiquity of the Google brand, analysts are bearish about the eBookstore’s chances against the mighty Amazon.  “The Kindle brand is solid and their devices are super-elegant, very cheap now, and their bookstore is second to none as far as bookstores go,” Forrester Research analyst James McQuivey told Reuters, adding that Google has a “better chance” of unseating Barnes & Noble for second spot. And although Google eBooks marks a significant push into the e-retail market, but as Google might be typified as, money’s not everything. “Launching Google eBooks is an initial step toward giving you greater access to the vast variety of information and entertainment found in books,” wrote Murray.
Even analysts are homing in on that point. They believe that the revenue earned from selling books is secondary to the “breadth of online services [Google] will be able to provide”, reports Reuters.

First iPad Only Magazine Launched By Virgin - "Project"

Virgin Blue Boss Richard Branson has launched what he says is the "first truly digital" magazine for Apple's iPad. Called Project, the publication is a monthly style and culture magazine that will be sold through Apple's App store. The publication has been launched ahead of the much publicised digital magazine for the iPad called The Daily, which is due to be launched by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation. Murdoch is endeavouring to find a sustainable model for his online newpapers, which have recently suffered in circulation since the increased competition from free content on the internet, and the switch by The Times online newspaper to charge online subscribers.
Branson's new project was launched in New York and features video, sound and links to augment features on topics such as a new Jaguar car prototype and the film Tron: Legacy. The magazine will cost around AU $2.90, and will eventually be made available to other tablet devices.

GLOWING BIO-LED TREES Could Replace Street Lamps

New nanoparticles could replace lamps with biologically powered light that removes CO2 from atmosphere 24x7. Trees with naturally glowing leaves could one day offer an eco-friendly alternative to street lamps. Researchers from the Academia Sinica and the National Cheng Kung University in Taipei have implanted glowing, sea urchin shaped gold nanoparticles, known as bio light emitting diodes, or bio LEDs, inside the leaves of a plant. The new nanoparticles could replace the electricity powered street light with biologically powered light that removes CO2 from the atmosphere 24 hours a days. In the future, bio-LED could be used to make roadside trees luminescent at night. This will save energy and absorb CO2 as the bio-LED luminescence will cause the chloroplast to conduct photosynthesis,” Discovery News quoted Yen-Hsun Su . The gold, sea urchin-shaped nanoparticles are the key to turning a material that normal absorbs light into one that emits it. Chlorophyll, the photosynthetic pigment that gives leaves their characteristic green colour, is widely known for its ability to absorb certain wavelengths of light. However, under certain circumstances, such as being exposed to violet light, chlorophyll can also produce a light of its own. When exposed to light with a wavelengths of about 400 nanometres the normally green coloured chlorophyll glows red. Violet light is hard to come by though, especially at night, when glowing leaves would be useful. The scientists needed a source of violet light, and found it in the gold nanoparticles. When shorter wavelengths of light, invisible to the human eye, hit the gold nanoparticles, they get excited and start to glow violet. That violet light strikes the nearby chlorophyll molecules, excites them, and the chlorophyll then produces the red light. The scientists hope that that trees treated with the gold nanoparticles would produce enough light that they could replace electric or gas street lights. ( Source: Mumbaimirror)

Richard Brandson Launching Digital Magazine for IPAD
Plans for the digital magazine –which is said to focus on business, culture, design, entertainment and travel –will be announced Tuesday, Nov. 30. Virgin, the group of companies that Branson heads, is describing its magazine as a “revolutionary multimedia” publication. According to the Telegraph, the project is going to be headed up by Branson’s daughter, Holly, and Anthony Noguera, the former editor of magazines Zoo, FHM and Arena. Word about Branson’s iPad magazine comes shortly after an announcement by Rupert Murdoch, owner of News Corporation, that he plans to launch an iPad daily newspaper called The Daily. It is expected to be unveiled on Dec. 9 and will likely be sold for 99 cents a week. The Huffington Post is reporting that Apple CEO Steve Jobs will host the event. Murdoch’s iPad newspaper will cost about $30 million to create and is expected to launch early next year, according to British media reports. No cost projections are available for Branson’s project. According to mashable.com, Branson will be announcing his project in New York. However, not everyone is in agreement on just whom the magazine will be directed toward. Some suggest it will be a business, technology, and design digital magazine exclusively. Others believe it may simply be an in-flight digital magazine for Virgin passengers. Technology websites are reporting that Branson’s venture may be part of Apple’s “freshly rumoured subscription API’s, which are supposed to be in the works for a Dec. 13 release as part of iOS4.3.”

According to slashgear.com, these APIs would allow content producers to sign up subscribers to periodicals such as “the Project” and The Daily with weekly or monthly fees. Mashable.com said that the iPad and other tablets present an opportunity for publishing houses to create paid-for content without the costs of printing and distribution.

ACER unveils a range of Android tablets

Acer, the world's number two PC manufacturer, has unveiled a range of tablet computers to help it compete with Apple's iPad, wading into the fast-growing market. The tablet computer market is becoming crowded as more companies produce the new devices, which fall between traditional PCs and smartphones. Chief executive Gianfranco Lanci announced at a news conference in New York on Tuesday that the tablets would have 5-, 7-, and 10-inch screens, running on Google's Android software. A second 10-inch tablet will run on Microsoft's Windows.
The company said the Wi-Fi-only models of the tablets would come out in April 2011, while the third-generation (3G)-capable models would arrive about a month later. The 5-inch tablet doubles as a smartphone. Separately Tuesday, Acer's rival Dell announced a new tablet that runs on Microsoft's Windows software. Acer, based in Taiwan, said it was in talks with US phone carriers for 3G connectivity for its tablets. No prices had been set for the devices, the company added. "It's a gold rush right now," said NPD analyst Ross Rubin. "Everyone wants to get a tablet product out there."
Apple's iPad, a touchscreen tablet that began selling in April, still has an overwhelming lead in the fledgling market. It controlled 95 per cent of the tablet market in the July-to-September quarter, according to research firm Strategy Analytics. "PC vendors and hardware vendors are looking at this market and saying 'how will I compete with Apple?'" Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi said. Tablet sales are expected to grow to 54 million units in 2011 and to more than 100 million units in 2012, according to a forecast by research firm Gartner. Acer also unveiled a screen laptop with two 14-inch LCD touch screens called the Iconia, along with a media store and software called Clear.fi that lets customers stream content on different Acer devices. Dell's new 10-inch touchscreen Inspiron Duo looks and runs like a portable tablet but can also be popped into a laptop shell and used like a traditional notebook, similar to one of the new Acer tablets. The Duo starts at $US550. Dell has already released the 5-inch Streak tablet. (Reuters)

Thought-pad on the way......

It is possible to manipulate complex visual images on a computer screen using only the mind. The study, published in Nature, found that when subjects had their brains connected to a PC displaying two merged images, they could force the computer to display one of the images and discard the other. The signal transmitted from each subject's brain to the computer were derived from just a handful of brain cells. The study reflects progress in the development of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), devices that allow people to control computers or other devices with their thoughts. BCIs hold promise for helping paralysed individuals to communicate or control prosthetic limbs.

Shiny Brazilian beetle may lead to futuristic Computers

Researchers have discovered that the structural arrangements seen on a shiny Brazilian beetle may lead to futuristic computers that use light rather than electricity to process information. Scientists have long dreamed of computer chips based on light rather than electricity. In " optical computing" chips would need photonic crystals to channel light particles. Potentially these beetle scales could serve as a mold or template to which semiconductor material, like titanium or silica, can be added. The original beetle material can then be removed with acid leaving an inverse structure of the beetle crystal, a now usable photonic crystal in the visible light regions.

Apple Looks Beyond Antennagate to Drive Out Papermaster

The Wall Street Journal, citing anonymous sources, reports that Papermaster fell out of favor months ago with Apple chief executive Steve Jobs. Papermaster reportedly wasn't used to Jobs' hands-on style, and seemed to lack the creative thinking and ability to directly manage tasks that Apple expected. The Journal says it's unclear to what extent Papermaster's departure was related to iPhone 4 problems, which in addition to "antennagate" include supply problems for the black model and delays for the white iPhone 4.

Papermaster started his job at Apple in April 2009, while Jobs was on sick leave for a liver transplant. The two may have clashed when Jobs returned later that year. Apple won't officially say whether Papermaster quit on his own or was ousted.

Recently, Apple bruised its image, at least temporarily, when iPhone 4 owners noticed issues with signal loss. The phone can lose signal strength when held over its lower left-hand corner, most noticeably in areas with poor reception.

Take the Journal's report with a grain of salt. Engadget notes that one of the story's co-authors, Yukari Iwatani Kane, is "widely considered to be Apple's favorite go-to source when it wants to control a story in the press." So even if the iPhone 4's antenna problem played a role in Papermaster's departure, Apple may have leaked the story of a cultural clash to cloud the issue.
But in snuffing the antennagate chatter, the Journal's unnamed sources may have pointed to a more devastating long-term problem: Steve Jobs won't be able to give hell to Apple executives forever. Jobs' obsession with minor details is well-known, but the fact that the same obsession is required of every executive makes me wonder what will happen whenever Jobs calls it quits. If Papermaster was allowed to take a more traditional management approach of delegating tasks, and the iPhone 4 suffered as a result, his departure paints a gloomy picture of life after Jobs.

RIM's Torch 9800 sports a slide-out keyboard, touchscreen, and is the first BlackBerry to run 6 OS

Research in Motion (RIM) unveiled its first BlackBerry with both a touchscreen and a physical slide-out QWERTY keyboard at a New York City press event on Tuesday. The phone is also the first BlackBerry to run 6 OS. The Torch 9800 will debut August 12 on AT&T for $200 with a two-year contract.

Like the Palm Pre, the Torch has a vertical slide-out keyboard. From what I can glean from images of the Torch, the keyboard looks fairly similar to the keyboards found on the BlackBerry Bold models with sculpted, ergonomic keys. A little thicker than some of the other top-line smartphones out right now, the Torch measures 4.4 by 2.4 by 0.6-inches thick. The 3.2-inch 360-by-480 capacitive touch display comes equipped with multitouch (for zooming in and out), which will be supported in the browser and photo gallery.

The front face of the phone has four buttons familiar to BlackBerry users: Talk, Menu, Back and Power/End. These buttons flank the square optical touchpad, which can be used for navigation in addition to the touchscreen.
Finally, RIM has caught up with the rest of the smartphone pack and upgraded the BlackBerry camera to a 5-megapixel camera. BlackBerry camera's generally have pretty dismal photo quality, so hopefully the Torch steps up its game. The camera also has a flash as well as autofocus, image stabilization and geo-tagging.

Sensors to detect blood sugar levels from the breadth

Engineers at the university of Florida have designed sensors that can be used for the application of monitoring diabetics glucose levels from the breadth. The technology used here is the same which is widely used for making chips in cell phones & other electronic devices . The sensors work by mating different reactive substances with gallium nitrade commonly used in amplifiers in cellphones and other electronic applications. At 100 micros, or 100 millionths of a metre, this sensor is so small that the moisture from one breadth is enough to get a concentrated reading. Cost is as little as Rs 10 or 20 cents, but is likely to increase when it would be converted to make an equipment to wirelessly transmit to PCs or cellphones. The entire package might cost around $40 or Rs 1800, and could be halved with mass production.
